Do you have a marketing plan for your business, or are you just flying by the seat of your pants? With over 20 years of experience working with small business owners, I’ve found that a significant percentage of small businesses lack a marketing plan. This observation is backed by surveys showing that about 50% of small and medium business owners do not have a marketing plan.
A lack of a plan usually results in haphazard, ineffective marketing that often wastes money, time, and effort. Having a written marketing plan can help businesses stay focused, manage budgets, and effectively reach their target audience, leading to increased sales and growth.
If you don’t have a marketing plan but your business is very successful, congratulations! However, I’m willing to bet that with a plan, you could generate even more revenue. Lack of effective marketing is one of the top reasons why many small businesses fail, underachieve, or never reach their full potential.
So why is it that only about 50% of small businesses owners have a marketing plan?
1. Lack of Knowledge: Many small business owners may not have a strong understanding of marketing principles and strategies.
2. Time Constraints: Running a small business often means wearing many hats, leaving little time for strategic planning.
3.Budget Limitations: Limited financial resources can make it challenging to allocate funds for marketing efforts.
4. Uncertainty on How to Start: Some business owners might not know where to begin when it comes to creating a marketing plan.
5. Overwhelmed by Options: The vast array of marketing tools and strategies can be overwhelming, leading to haphazard approach rather than a focused plan.
Developing a marketing plan doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. By focusing on these twelve critical questions, you can create a concise plan that guides your marketing efforts:
1. What are my main objectives: branding or lead generation?
2. Have I clearly defined the benefits of my products or services?
3. Who is my target audience, and how can I build a list of their contact information?
4. Why should someone choose my business over competitors?
5. Do I need lead generation pages and sales funnels?
6. How will I stay in touch with current and potential customers?
7. What strategies will I use to convert leads into paying customers?
8. How can I encourage referrals and repeat business?
9. What is the lifetime value of my average customer, and how much am I willing to invest in acquiring a new customer?
10. How will I track and measure the success of my marketing efforts?
11. Do I have a marketing calendar outlining tasks and deadlines?
12. Do I have the necessary skills or resources to implement my plan?
When you use the answers to these 12 question to develop your marketing plan it will put your business on a path to increase sales and revenue.
An effective marketing plan is your secret weapon for capturing potential customers and increasing sales. Without a solid plan, even the best products or services may never see the light of day.
Running a business without a marketing plan is like stepping into a boxing match with one hand tied behind your back. You might land a few punches, but eventually, your opponent will knock you out cold! Don’t let your business get knocked out when you have the power to prevent it.
That being said, I must emphasize that building a business is hard work. It takes time, patience, and persistence. You have to be open-minded to trying new and different strategies. There is no marketing silver bullet.
I will leave you with this quote by world-renowned business consultant Peter Drucker: “Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two—and only two—basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs.”
