Your phone is quieter than it used to be. Your website contact form is empty. You check your Google ranking—and it looks fine.
So what gives? Most owners think they messed up. Or that business is just “slow.”
That is not it. Here is what actually changed.
Google now answers questions directly on the search page. You do not even have to click a website anymore. Someone searches “How much does a plumber cost?” Google gives them the AI answer right there. They read it. They move on.
They never visit your site. They never fill out your form.
Last year, about 18 out of 1,000 informational searches clicked through to a website. Now? Only about 6 do.
If someone needs you right now—like a burst pipe or a table for tonight—they still call. But the strangers who were just doing research? The ones who used to find you and become customers later? Now, they get their answer from Google and disappear. You are losing the next batch of future customers, and you won’t notice until your calendar is empty in October.
Your Action Plan (This Week’s Homework)
You do not need to read spreadsheets to fix this, but you do need to pivot. If Google is keeping the traffic, you must dominate the one place they still feature local businesses: the Google 3-Pack (the map results).
Take five minutes today and do this:
- Search your main service on your phone (e.g., “Contractor near me”). Are you in the top 3 map results?
- Check your reviews. Are your competitors getting fresh reviews while yours are months old?
- Check your photos. Is your profile active, or does it look abandoned?
If you are not in the 3-Pack, your leads will continue to dry up.
Is this zero-click shift actually hurting your specific market yet, or is it just something to monitor? That is what a quick conversation is for. No pitch, no pressure—just an honest look at your current Google footprint and the exact steps to fix it.
